Building Security - Are You Secure?

!±8± Building Security - Are You Secure?

In the workplace environment, whether you are a large, medium or small size business, or even if you are operating from home, security consideration should be taken into account with regard to staff, premises, general and system security. Security considerations are basically the same for every business - even a business run from home.

There should always be a Security Operations Procedures Plan for any size business, and an Emergency Procedure Plan as well as an Occupational Health and Safety Plan. You need to have the basics covered to achieve adequate to excellent security. Start from the outside and work inwards...

o Your building design and layout should be open and uncluttered, well lit around the entire premises and have clear views of the front, the side, rear, and entire roofline. The windows and entrances, exits, shed doors, should in no way be obstructed from view. If a new building is about to be built, seek the advice of a security consultant in regard to design. Do not take the architect or builder's word on security design alone.
o If you have fences make sure they are between 6 to 8 feet high, have barbed wire or electric capabilities if needed (have a professional assessment of what you actually need in regard to level of security, location and what you are protecting), and be of good repair.
o Gates should be locked after hours and when not in use, rubbish and other items should be cleared from around fences and gates so that no one can use it to help them scale the fence.
o Movement lights should be in place especially at all entrances and gates, and these should be maintained, adjusted, cleaned and checked - every 2 months.
o Cameras should also be maintained, adjusted, cleaned and checked - every 3 to 6 months.
o Security systems should be checked (walk through sensor test) once a month, and regularly checked and maintained for maximum usage.
o Ensure that roof access is restricted by barriers - use anti scale barriers or slip paints.

Are your external doors and windows, locks and frames security rated? Do they also have coded locks, key card locks, or swipe card electronic access?

A consultant can give you correct advice on what is best for your location and use.

Access control can come in some different formats

Swipe card and code technology - This will report how, when and where swipe card entry was attempted, it will identify who the person is by code recognition or video footage and if entry was approved or denied. Biometrics technology - A system that recognises unique human fingerprints, hand prints, voice modulation, facial characteristics or eye irises for accurate identity access management. Both systems can provide full activity reports, and password protection is available on most software packages. Intercom systems and integrated digital camera systems can work together in providing complete coverage and will report recording over your entire site both external and internal.
